The story focuses on two main characters: 12-year-olds Lina and Doon.

How long will the electric generator last? Power cuts have become common, when the whole city is plunged into complete darkness. Ember, however, is not quite the safe haven it once was. Beyond Ember, darkness goes on in all directions. The city is lit by powerful electric lights, but the rest of the world is dark. The story then shifts forward to the people who live in Ember, after the box has quietly opened. While the Mayors do not know the contents of the box they are told to keep it safe over the years and to not tell anyone else about it. The box is entrusted to the Mayors of Ember, who each pass it down to the successive Mayor as they take office. They leave instructions for the citizens in a special sealed box which will open automatically after 200 years when it should be safe to leave the city.

Two of the Builders discuss what will happen when supplies run low and conditions become bad. The story begins after the construction of the city of Ember. The film was released on October 10, 2008, and it was later released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. A film adaptation of the novel, titled City of Ember, was produced by Walden Media and Playtone, with Saoirse Ronan as Lina, Harry Treadaway as Doon, and Bill Murray as the mayor. It also spent several weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. It received several awards, including the 2006 Mark Twain Award, and was one of the recipients of the 2004 American Library Association Notable Book award. Chronologically, it is the second book in the series.
#CITY OF EMBER RATED SERIES#
The novel is the first in the publication order of The Books of Ember series, with the next book to be published in the series being The People of Sparks. Nonetheless, a charming film that I hope made enough money to spawn treatment of the books sequels. The City of Ember is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel, written by Jeanne DuPrau, and published in 2003. In the director's corner, he is guilty of some slow scenes, but what is almost unforgivable is the flat looks of the actors during intense CGI action. Worst of all, the ending feels like a poor man's Goonies. Despite being replete with a nefarious mayor and a mutated mole (like the massive moths, never explained), the story uses neither of these things enough, leaving some scenes to be propelled solely by the heroes following the by-the-numbers instructions left to them. Often times there is a lack of a perceived threat. Unfortunately, they don't get to these instructions fast enough, and a lot of time is spent wandering around the, albeit, beautiful city.

The concept, the builders of Ember leaving behind secret instructions to get back to the world, is genuinely engaging. The acting is solid, the set design and music excellent. This is without doubt, an exciting romp about two coming-of-age children who break out of the mold forced on them by the dying Ember, and in doing so, change everything. Unfortunately, it falls short, but only just. Perhaps to stand next to such fare as Harry Potter, or a Pixar flick. If the only thing City of Ember does is show that Belfast can play host to high concept movies, then it was worthwhile, but no doubt, it was aiming for more than that.
